Leelanau County is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Its lakes and miles of scenic rivers provide the county with access to canoeing, boating, and charter fishing. Leelanau County is also home to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the miles of unspoiled bluffs known as the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes which contribute to the natural beauty of the area. The population and labor force of Leelanau County continues to grow. In 1995, the county population increased 11.95% from 1990. In 1997, the total labor force of Leelanau County increased 7% from 1994. In 1997, the Grand Traverse LMA, consisting of Benzie, Kalkaska, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse counties employed 19.1% of the labor force in the Good Producing industry, 68% in the Service Producing industry, and 21.2% in Retail Trade.
